MASCOTS

"What a grand thing, to be loved!
What a grander thing still, to love!" - Victor Hugo

Meet  Astrud's beloved mascots...

Jera

"My beautiful Jera crossed the 'rainbow bridge' on September 15, 2008.  My sorrow for losing her is immense. I would like the 'whole world' to know how sweet, special and beautiful my little Jera was" - Astrud Gilberto

This is the beautiful Maya

Maya became one of Astrud’s mascots in late September of 2008, when she was rescued,  having been abandoned at a rural property's backyard.  Maya’s story is one with a happy ending, as she is now living a happy life in a loving forever home.  On behalf of Maya, who struggled to survive and suffered much despair as result of having been abandoned, we are posting below the poem "Prayer Of a Homeless Cat" (of unknown author) to remind you all, our dear friends, of how important our role is as caring human beings to give a home to a previously abandoned, neglected or abused animal.

Prayer Of A Homeless Cat

Please guide me Heavenly Father

Somewhere above the sky,

To a place to call my own,

That is safe and warm and dry.

A soft bed in the corner,

A dish beside the door;

Bells and balls and catnip toys,

Scattered on the floor.

A bowl of fish or chicken...

Every Single Day;

A tummy full, not empty,

For this, dear Lord, I pray.

A gentle hand to smooth my fur,

A lap to call my own,

Being loved and cherished,

And never more alone.

"One small cat changes coming home to an empty house to coming home."- Pam Brown

Jera... Kittums... Blackie... sorely missed mascots...

"If I could have a lifetime wish, a dream that would come true,

I'd pray to God with all my heart, for yesterday and you

A thousand words can't  bring you back, I know because I've tried

And neither will a million tears, I know because I've cried

You left behind my broken heart, and happy memories too

But I never wanted memories... I only wanted You. "  - Debbie Shoop

THIS OLD CAT

(Author Unknown)

I'm going on in years, my coat is turning gray

My eyes have lost their luster, my hearing's just okay

I spend my day dreaming of conquests in my past,

Lying near a sunny window, waiting for its warm repast

I remember our first visit, I was coming to you free,

Hoping you would take me in, and keep me company

I wasn't young or handsome, two years I'd roamed the street…

There were scars upon my face, I hobbled on my feet

I could sense your disappointment, as I left my prison cage

Oh, I hoped you would accept me, and look beyond my age...

You took me out of pity, I accepted without shame

Then you grew to love me, and I admit the same

I have shared with you your laughter, you have wet my fur with tears,

We've come to know each other throughout these many years

Just one more hug this morning, before you drive away

And know I'll think about you throughout your busy day

The time we've left together is a treasured time at that

My heart is yours forever
